One Minute Writer: Phrase

I love One Minute Writer. I love that I am going to get back into reading and writing from it. Love, love, love it!

Today's Prompt: Phrase

What is a phrase you find yourself saying repeatedly?
Holy Crap! I just started working out again: running, pilates, yoga, and kettlebell. I have had several days recently where I have been feeling every muscle in my body. When I try to get out of a chair, "holy crap" I can't believe how stiff my muscles got in 15 minutes!

One Minute Writer, oh how I’ve missed you

I love the One Minute Writer blog. I used to write about it all the time, using the prompt’s from Beth’s page. Then the move happened. I really want to get back into my blog regularly and this might be my key. Even when I didn’t feel like writing, the OMW made feel like it.
Saturday’s prompt was Doctor: Write about the best or worst doctor who has treated you.
First let me say, I know and have several fantastic doctors in my life, all who have taken tremendous care of me and who are tremendous friends. But let me tell you about Sarah, a fantastic P.A.  I needed a care provider when I moved to VA & Shari said she was fantastic…and boy was she right.  I usually just blindly picked a doctor and walked away feeling bad if the doctor chewed me out. But not Sarah. She listened, made me feel comfortable, didn’t mind if I asked questions, put up with my lack of patience, always entertained my wish to make changes vs. take a pill, and most of all, she cares.  I actually wanted to get better each year for when I went back to see her. When her office stopped taking my insurance, I kept going. When I moved away, I flew back to finish some dental work and crammed in one last yearly check up visit with her before I had to switch doctors. She set a new standard for how I “rate” doctors who treat me. She recently switched offices and said people cried when she told them. I definitely would have cried, too. Sarah, thank you. Health care providers like you make the world a better place.

I occasionally (not as much as I'd like) stop by One Minute Writer and spend a minute writing.

One Minute Writer: 101

Today's Writing Prompt: 101
Colleges offer courses like English 101 and Biology 101, teaching students the basics of those subjects. What "101" course do you think colleges should offer to help 18-year-old students learn what they really need to know?

What will & won't get you a job 101

It would offer advice on things like:

Wearing that sparkly shirt that says "Sexy" that is 2 sizes too small will not get you the job.

Swearing might make you look cool to your friends, but dropping the f-bomb while telling a story does not help for effect in an interview.

If you put on your resume or application that you got fired from your last job because you didn't like your boss telling you to do things you didn't want to do, don't be surprised if you don't get a call back.

One Minute Writer: Torture

Today's Writing Prompt: Torture
If someone wanted to torture you by locking you in a room with speakers blaring music you hated, what music would they choose?

Anything Donny Osmond is singing.

Not because I hate his music necessarily, but because I have a grudge about my high school choir getting bumped by him when we were scheduled to sing the national anthem at a Cubs game. Now when I hear him or see him, I still get mad. Really, you couldn't have let the kids sing and come back some other time?

Yes, his music would torture me.

One Minute Writer: Warning

Today's Writing Prompt: Warning
If you wore a WARNING sign that could be read by everyone who meets you and would warn them of something they should know about you, what would it say?

WARNING:
Life here will be exciting:
laughs loudly, impatient, rarely punctual, procrastinator, klutzy, easily distractable, very competitive.

One Minute Writer: Triathlon

Today's Writing Prompt: Triathlon
Most of us couldn't win a swim/bike/run race. What three activities would you like to do competitively in your own "triathlon"?

I certainly could win this triathlon:
procrastinating
being late
talking too much

But

I would love to do this one, involving things I love (that I don't make enough time for):
Singing along to my iPod to my favorite songs
Yoga
Reading

Today's Writing Prompt: Grown Up
Write about a way in which you act grown up...but wish you still acted like a kid.

My relationship with my grandfather....he has had a roller coaster year in terms of his health, and I now live close by again. He was in & out of the hospital & is now in a nursing home. Instead of him getting on me about "what's good for you" like he did when I was younger (eat your veggies, work hard, etc), I find myself trying to convince him about things that are happening for his good, to protect him, to ensure we he has the best life he can. While we have a great relationship, I wish I didn't have to be a grown up and sometimes lecture him about things like this. Sometimes I want to trade being a grown up & talking about nursing homes and medications for being a kid & being able to "argue" about vegetables again.

One Minute Writer: Break

OMW: Break

What item you own do you secretly wish would break so you could upgrade it?

My washer & dryer. There are perfectly fine....the ones we bought when we bought our house in VA 7 years ago...But I really want one of those new, "greener", more environmental types.

Just won't do it til the old ones die...

Today's Writing Prompt: Name

You've decided you want a new name--one that will reflect who you are. What is your new name?

Dre - it's a name that shortens my actual name to a shorter version; a friend decided my name was pronounced too many ways that weren't acutallly my name, so he really shortened it...and it stuck......DRE!

One Minute Writer: Scared

Today's Writing Prompt: Scared

Write about something that scared you as a child.

I have always had a lot of fears, but the scariest one was that my dad, who is a police officer, wouldn't come home at night. There were nights that I would pray and pray and pray that he would be ok. I was convinced that if I prayed hard enough it would be enough to protect him if he ran into any really bad people or, since he works in Iowa, any really bad weather.

Today's Prompt: The World Today

Is our world today a better or worse place than it was when you were a kid?

wow...what a great question. i found myself putting something under the better column, then worse, then better, then worse...and repeat.

Things like the lifelong friendships I have forged in the last few years, my marriage, medical advances, and a historical presidental race (wow..that minute was fast!) are better...and cool...

Things like the state of the economy and the stressful pace and expectations of the world...definitely worse.
